Alfa Romeo
Romeo is not just a character on a thespian Shakespearean. It is also an Italian auto manufacturing deity committed to the construction of auto mobiles at heavenly standards, but for mortal drivers. Ever since it began producing cars, it has been the Alpha without the Omega and its activities have never been threatened by any permanent halting. A glance at the Alpha Romeo court of arms would make you think of an early religious movement with a red cross against a white background. Then there is also the dragon headed snake to the right of the cross which resembles the devilish creature killed by Saint George. But all these should not scare you and make you think that Alpha Romeo is some sort of a secret evil society, but rather the design was by human beings and was meant to convey just a single message – devotion and performance.
Though the firm is thought to be 100% Italian, a glance at its beginning will prove otherwise. Originally, the company was founded as Societa Anonima Italiana Darracq a French automobile industry entrepreneur – Darracq, and he received help from some Italian investors in 1906. One of the major highlights of the company came when Ugo Stella assumed the chairmanship of the newly formed Milan based corporate entity which would find it difficult to sell cars by 1909.
When the cars were not moving, Ugo made a decisive action of starting a new motor company together with Darracq and the other investors. The name AlLFA is actually an acronym for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, which loosely translate to Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company. The early productions of the company were some of the finest pieces of machinery, and they helped the company to make cars which appealed to the Italians and which would later become a cornerstone in the engineering and design of automobiles. Neapolitan Nicola Romeo, who was a mathematical teacher, took over the management of the company in 1915 during the First World War. Romeo introduced a lot of changes to the factory’s assembly line so that their production would meet the high demands for military equipment needed for the war.
Alpha Romeo also has a heavy presence in racing, where it has won a plethora of competitions ever since the birth of their initial 24hp model released in 1910 and introduced to the then popular Sicilian Targa Florio competition. Soon after its victorious starts, more victories would follow on equally competitive races all over Europe. However, the immense success of the Alfa Romeo cars in the next five decades had very little to show in terms of the financials. Its economic growth was stunted and consequently, the company was purchased by Finmeccanica S.P.A 50 years later to avoid going into bankruptcy.
However, the state owned industrial group that purchased Alpha Romeo would not hold onto it longer and had to give up on it due to financial difficulties. Before becoming totally gone and forgotten, the company was adopted by Fiat as one of its group’s subsidiaries and the two have been rolling together since 1986.
